Begin with elephants bathing at Pinnawala, then explore Sri Lanka's legendary Cultural Triangle: the 5th-century sky fortress of Sigiriya, the ancient royal capital of Polonnaruwa, and the cave temples of Dambulla. In Kandy, witness centuries-old dance traditions and the city's sacred Buddhist heritage. The misty highlands of Nuwara Eliya reveal colonial tea estates and cool mountain air. The south coast brings Galle's Dutch fort, dolphin-rich waters at Mirissa, and the relaxed beach town of Bentota — the perfect closing chapter.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day1

Arrival → Negombo

Arrive at Bandaranaike International Airport. Welcome by Lanka JP Tours with a traditional garland. Transfer to Negombo (20 min from airport). Settle in, evening stroll along Negombo's famous fish market and canal. Dinner and overnight Negombo.

Negombo → Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage → Sigiriya

After breakfast, drive towards the Cultural Triangle.

Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage Included — the world's largest herd of captive elephants (80+). Watch the famous river bathing ritual where elephants wade into the Maha Oya River twice daily. Also home to orphaned baby elephants raised by caretakers.

Village Tour, Sigiriya Included — arrive in Sigiriya and experience authentic village life: ox-cart ride, traditional cooking demonstration, bullock cart ride through paddy fields, toddy tasting, and village walk.

Check in, dinner and overnight Sigiriya (Full Board).

Day3

Sigiriya Rock Fortress

Sigiriya Rock Fortress Included — UNESCO World Heritage Site. King Kashyapa's 5th-century sky palace rises 200m from the surrounding jungle. Climb past the famous frescoes of celestial maidens (Apsaras), through the Lion's Paw terrace, to the summit with its water gardens visible far below. Return via Mirror Wall with ancient graffiti dating back to the 8th century.

Afternoon at leisure — pool, spa, or walks around the Sigiriya moat gardens.

Polonnaruwa – Ancient Royal Capital

Polonnaruwa Ancient City Included — UNESCO World Heritage Site. The royal capital of the Chola and Sinhalese kings from the 11th–13th centuries. Highlights include the Royal Palace complex, the Vatadage (circular relic shrine), Gal Vihara (four magnificent Buddha statues carved from a single granite rock face), Parakrama Samudra sea (a vast irrigation reservoir), and the Lotus Pond.

Return to Sigiriya. Dinner and overnight (Full Board).

Kaudulla National Park Elephant Safari

Kaudulla National Park Included — one of Sri Lanka's most spectacular wildlife experiences. The ancient Kaudulla tank (3rd century AD) draws 200–300 wild elephants to its shores during the seasonal gathering (July–October). Game drive by open-top jeep through scrub jungle and around the tank — high chance of leopard, sloth bear, deer, and dozens of bird species in addition to the elephant herds.

Afternoon at leisure in Sigiriya. Dinner and overnight (Full Board).

Sigiriya → Dambulla Cave Temples → Kandy

Dambulla Cave Temple Included — Sri Lanka's largest and best-preserved ancient cave temple complex, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Five caves filled with 150+ Buddha statues and ceiling murals covering 2,100 sq.m — the largest collection of Buddhist art in Sri Lanka. The golden Buddha entrance statue outside is visible from the main road 2km away.

Spice Garden, Matale — en route to Kandy, a guided walk through a working spice plantation explaining cinnamon, pepper, cloves, cardamom, and vanilla. Arrive Kandy. Dinner and overnight.

Kandy – Temple of the Tooth · Cultural Show

Sri Dalada Maligawa — Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic Included — the island's most sacred Buddhist site, housing the tooth relic of Lord Buddha within the old Royal Palace complex. Witness the morning puja (ritual offering), surrounded by the fragrance of incense and the sound of traditional drums.

Kandy Cultural Show Included — a spectacular 1-hour performance of traditional Kandyan drumming, fire walking, and the famous Kandyan dancers — the same dances performed at the Esala Perahera (the world's longest-running pageant). The finale features fire-eating and fire-walking over hot coals.

Evening walk around Kandy Lake. Overnight Kandy.

Kandy – Peradeniya Royal Botanical Gardens

Peradeniya Royal Botanical Gardens Included — 147 acres of the finest tropical botanical garden in Asia. Home to 4,000 plant species including the Great Lawn with its giant Javan fig, the Orchid House with 300 orchid varieties, the Palm Avenue, and the famous Cannonball trees along the Mahaweli River. Walk through bamboo groves and spice groves that have inspired visitors since the 14th century.

Afternoon free to explore Kandy market, gem shops, or the Arts & Crafts Centre. Overnight Kandy.

Kandy → Nuwara Eliya – Tea Country

Drive up into the central highlands on winding mountain roads through terraced tea estates.

Tea Factory Visit Included — see the complete journey of tea from leaf to cup: withering, rolling, oxidising, drying, sorting, and grading. Sri Lanka produces some of the world's finest high-grown teas above 1,800m altitude.

Nuwara Eliya — "Little England of Sri Lanka" at 1,868m. Colonial-era bungalows, rose gardens, strawberry farms, and the famous Gregory Lake. Dinner and overnight.

Nuwara Eliya – Horton Plains & World's End

Horton Plains National Park Optional (early start 6am) — UNESCO World Heritage Site. The 9km circular trail through cloud forest and montane grassland leads to World's End — a sheer 870m escarpment with views to the southern coastal plains on clear mornings. Also includes Baker's Falls (20m waterfall) and the Mini World's End viewpoint.

Afternoon at leisure in Nuwara Eliya — Gregory Lake boating, horse riding, or strawberry picking at a local farm. Overnight.

Nuwara Eliya → Ella → Galle

Morning stop at Ella — the charming hill-station town famous for the Nine Arches Bridge (built entirely of brick and cement, no steel, during British colonial rule) and views into the Ella Gap valley.

Drive south through the tea highlands to Galle on the south coast. Galle Dutch Fort (evening stroll) Included — the most extensive remaining European fortification in Asia, built by the Portuguese in 1588 and reinforced by the Dutch in 1663. Cobblestone streets, Dutch colonial buildings, lighthouse, and rampart walks with Indian Ocean sunset views.

Dinner and overnight Galle.

Day12

Galle – Fort Exploration & South Coast

Morning guided walk through Galle Fort — Maritime Museum, Dutch Reformed Church (1755), the Groote Kerk, local gemstone workshops, and the famous lighthouse on the ocean ramparts.

Afternoon visit Koggala Lake (boat safari optional), sea stilt fishermen (seasonal), and the Mask Museum in Ambalangoda — home to traditional Sri Lankan devil-dance masks. Overnight Galle.

Galle → Mirissa – Arrival at the Ocean

Short 45-minute drive east to Mirissa — one of Sri Lanka's most beautiful crescent beaches, and the departure point for the world's largest mammal: the blue whale.

Afternoon swimming, snorkelling, or kayaking in the warm turquoise Indian Ocean. Fresh seafood dinner on the beach. Overnight Mirissa.

Mirissa – Blue Whale & Dolphin Watching

Blue Whale & Dolphin Watching Included — early departure (5:30am) for the best chance of sightings. Mirissa is considered one of the top three whale-watching locations in the world. Blue whales (the largest animals on Earth, up to 30m long) are regularly sighted, along with sperm whales, Bryde's whales, and pods of spinner and bottlenose dolphins. Season: November–April is peak.

Afternoon at leisure on the beach. Overnight Mirissa.

Mirissa → Unawatuna → Bentota

Morning stop at Unawatuna Beach — consistently rated among Asia's finest beaches, with calm turquoise lagoon waters protected by a coral reef, perfect for snorkelling. View Japanese Peace Pagoda on the hillside.

Continue to Bentota — the golden sand resort town at the Bentota River estuary. Check in, sunset cruise on Bentota River (optional). Overnight Bentota.

Bentota – Water Sports & River Safari

Bentota River Mangrove Safari Included — motorised boat through the Bentota lagoon into the mangrove forest: monitor lizards on the banks, water monitors, kingfishers, herons, and crocodiles in the quieter channels. Also visit a turtle hatchery protecting sea turtle eggs on the beach.

Water Sports Optional — jet ski, banana boat, windsurfing, wakeboarding — Bentota is Sri Lanka's water sports capital. Overnight Bentota.

Bentota – Leisure Beach Day

Full day at leisure at Bentota's golden beach. Indulge in a spa treatment at the resort, take a sunset beachside stroll, or visit the Brief Garden — a tropical garden designed by landscape artist Bevis Bawa (brother of the famous architect Geoffrey Bawa). Overnight Bentota.

Bentota → Colombo Day Excursion

Day trip to Colombo — Sri Lanka's vibrant capital city.

Colombo City Tour Included — the old Dutch hospital shopping precinct, the Pettah bazaar (oldest market in the country), Gangaramaya Temple (eclectic Buddhist museum-temple), Independence Square, the Viharamahadevi Park, Colombo Lighthouse, and the iconic Lotus Tower. Afternoon shopping at Odel, House of Fashions, or the Laksala craft emporium.

Return to Bentota. Overnight.

Bentota – Final Beach Day

Your last full day in paradise. A final swim, sunrise walk on the beach, or simply relaxing under the coconut palms. Pack up memories alongside your souvenirs — batik, lacquerwork, Ceylon sapphires, and packets of the world's finest cinnamon. Overnight Bentota.

Departure → Airport

After breakfast, transfer to Bandaranaike International Airport (approx. 2 hrs from Bentota). Check out and bid farewell to the Pearl of the Indian Ocean. Lanka JP Tours will assist with airport formalities and ensure a smooth departure.
