Colombo's Fort district was never actually a fort in the traditional sense — the Dutch built the original fortifications, but the city grew around them and the walls eventually disappeared into the urban fabric.

Sri Lanka made history when Sirimavo Bandaranaike became the world's first female Prime Minister in 1960 — decades before Margaret Thatcher (UK, 1979) or any other nation. Colombo's Lotus Tower (completed 2019) stands 350 metres tall — the tallest self-supported structure in South and Southeast Asia, and one of the 20 tallest towers in the world. Its distinctive lotus-flower shape was designed by a Sri Lankan architect and is visible from 40km away.
Built by the Dutch East India Company in the 1600s to serve its colonial workforce, the Dutch Hospital in Colombo Fort is now one of Sri Lanka's most stylish dining and retail precincts — a beautifully restored colonial complex where you can eat 21st-century cuisine inside walls that are 400 years old.
